CaseCX210C Fault Code 237: Technical Guide for Diagnosis and Repair

What is CaseCX210C Fault Code 237?

Fault Code 237 on the Case CX210C excavator indicates a Pilot Pressure Sensor Circuit Low Voltage condition. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered when the Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally low voltage signal from the pilot pressure sensor, which monitors the hydraulic pilot pressure that controls excavator functions.

The pilot pressure sensor is critical for the CX210C's hydraulic control system. It provides real-time feedback to the ECM about pilot circuit pressure, allowing the controller to properly modulate hydraulic flow to implements and swing functions. When this sensor circuit fails, the machine cannot accurately regulate hydraulic responses, potentially causing erratic operation or complete loss of functionality.

Common Symptoms

Operators experiencing Code 237 typically notice:

  • Sluggish or unresponsive joystick controls with delayed hydraulic reaction times
  • Illuminated warning lamp on the instrument cluster with reduced machine performance
  • Erratic implement movement or inconsistent swing speed during normal operations
  • Complete loss of auxiliary hydraulic functions in severe cases
  • Engine derate or power limitation mode as a protective measure to prevent hydraulic system damage

Potential Causes

Several conditions can trigger this low voltage fault on used CX210C excavators:

  • Failed pilot pressure sensor due to internal component degradation (common on machines with 5,000+ hours)
  • Damaged or corroded wiring harness near articulation points between upper and lower structures
  • Connector corrosion at the sensor plug or ECM interface, especially on machines operated in wet/muddy environments
  • Broken or chafed wires at known rub points near the hydraulic pump mounting area
  • Poor ground connection at the sensor mounting bracket or ECM ground strap
  • ECM internal fault (rare, but possible on high-hour machines with electrical history)

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 237

Step 1: Visual Inspection Begin by inspecting the pilot pressure sensor located near the main control valve assembly. Check for physical damage, oil contamination on the connector, or corrosion on terminals. On used excavators, carefully trace the sensor harness from the sensor to the ECM, looking for wire chafing at pivot points, especially where the harness passes through the center joint area.

Step 2: Electrical Testing Using a digital multimeter (DMM), check the sensor supply voltage at the connector with the key on, engine off. You should see approximately 5 volts on the supply wire. Measure resistance between the sensor ground and chassis ground—it should be less than 1 ohm. Check for open circuits or high resistance (over 5 ohms) in the signal wire back to the ECM.

Step 3: Sensor Output Verification With the sensor connected and engine running, backprobe the signal wire while activating pilot controls. Voltage should range from approximately 0.5V to 4.5V depending on pilot pressure. If voltage remains below 0.3V regardless of control input, replace the sensor.

Step 4: Connector and Harness Repair For used machines, clean all connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease to prevent future corrosion. Repair any damaged wiring using OEM-spec wire and proper heat-shrink connections. Secure harnesses away from sharp edges using new clips.
