Caterpillar Excavator Fault Code 00273-01: Meaning, Symptoms & Fix

What is Caterpillar Fault Code 00273-01?

Caterpillar Fault Code 00273-01 indicates that the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor signal has fallen below the expected minimum threshold, triggering a "Low Signal" or "Data Below Normal Range" diagnostic event within the ECM (Engine Control Module).

This code is classified under SPN 273, FMI 01, meaning the ECM is receiving a signal from the coolant temperature circuit that is abnormally low — often indicating an open circuit, a failed sensor, or a grounding issue rather than an actual cold engine condition.

On Caterpillar engines, accurate coolant temperature data is critical for fuel delivery calibration, fan control, aftertreatment management, and engine protection logic. An unreliable ECT signal can compromise all of these systems simultaneously.

Common Symptoms

When Fault Code 00273-01 is active, operators typically report:

  • Check Engine or warning lamp illuminated on the instrument cluster
  • Incorrect temperature gauge reading — often pegged at the lowest position or reading ambient temperature even at full operating temperature
  • Erratic or maximum cooling fan engagement, as the ECM defaults to a protection strategy
  • Possible engine derate — reduced power output as a failsafe measure
  • Difficulty with cold-start enrichment or extended warm-up cycles due to loss of accurate thermal data

Potential Causes

The most common technical causes for this fault include:

  • Failed ECT Sensor — internal open circuit within the sensor element (common on high-hour used machines)
  • Damaged wiring harness — broken or chafed wires between the sensor and the ECM, particularly at known rub points near the engine block or firewall routing
  • Corroded or loose connector pins — moisture intrusion into the sensor connector is extremely common on used excavators operating in wet environments
  • Open circuit in the signal wire — a break preventing voltage return to the ECM
  • ECM pin damage — bent or backed-out terminals at the ECM connector itself

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 00273-01

Step 1 — Visual Inspection First Before touching any components, physically inspect the ECT sensor connector and harness. On used excavators, look specifically for harness abrasion, melted insulation near exhaust components, and green corrosion inside connector pins. Clean connectors with electrical contact cleaner before drawing any conclusions.

Step 2 — Sensor Resistance Test Disconnect the ECT sensor and use a digital multimeter to measure resistance across the sensor terminals. At ambient temperature (~25°C), a healthy Cat ECT sensor typically reads between 2,000–3,000 ohms. An open reading (OL/infinite resistance) confirms sensor failure.

Step 3 — Wiring Continuity Check With the sensor disconnected, use your multimeter in continuity mode to test each wire from the sensor connector back to the ECM harness connector. Any open circuit requires harness repair or replacement. Utilize Cat ET (Electronic Technician) diagnostic software to monitor live sensor data and confirm the fix after reassembly.

Step 4 — Replace and Verify Install a new OEM or quality aftermarket ECT sensor, clear the fault code using Cat ET, and run the engine to full operating temperature to confirm the code does not return.

Always consult a certified Caterpillar dealer or licensed heavy equipment technician for repairs on safety-critical systems. Improper diagnosis or repair can result in equipment damage or personal injury.
