Caterpillar Excavator Fault Code 1119-3: Complete Diagnostic Guide

What is Caterpillar Fault Code 1119-3?

Caterpillar Fault Code 1119-3 indicates a high voltage condition on the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor circuit — specifically, the signal voltage has exceeded the acceptable upper threshold recognized by the Engine Control Module (ECM).

This code falls under the J1939 diagnostic framework and targets the 5-volt reference circuit that powers the oil pressure sensor. The ECM expects a return signal voltage typically between 0.5V and 4.5V; when the signal climbs above this range, Code 1119-3 is triggered.

On Caterpillar engines, accurate oil pressure data is critical for protecting internal engine components. A false or corrupted signal can cause the machine to enter derate mode or trigger unnecessary shutdowns, directly impacting productivity on the job site.

Common Symptoms

When Fault Code 1119-3 is active, operators and mechanics typically observe the following:

  • Active warning lamp or alarm on the operator display panel
  • Engine derate condition — reduced power output to protect the engine
  • Erratic or pinned oil pressure gauge readings (often reading maximum pressure)
  • Possible engine shutdown if the ECM interprets the signal as a critical fault
  • Cat ET (Electronic Technician) diagnostic software logging a continuous active fault

Potential Causes

Several conditions can drive the signal voltage abnormally high on this circuit:

  • Failed oil pressure sensor — internal short to the 5V reference or supply voltage
  • Damaged wiring harness — chafed insulation creating a short to a voltage source
  • Corroded or contaminated connectors — common on used excavators exposed to moisture and debris
  • Open ground circuit — loss of sensor ground forces signal voltage high
  • ECM internal fault — rare, but possible on high-hour machines with prior electrical damage

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 1119-3

Step 1 — Connect Cat ET Diagnostic Software Connect Cat ET to the machine's service port and confirm the fault is active. Note whether it is intermittent or continuous — intermittent faults often point to a harness or connector issue rather than a failed sensor.

Step 2 — Inspect the Harness and Connectors On used excavators, physically trace the oil pressure sensor harness from the sensor back to the ECM. Look for rub points near engine brackets, heat shields, or clamps. Check connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion before assuming sensor failure.

Step 3 — Perform Voltage Checks Using a digital multimeter, backprobe the sensor connector with the key ON:

  • Supply voltage (5V reference pin): should read 4.75V–5.25V
  • Signal pin: should read between 0.5V–4.5V at idle
  • Ground pin: should show less than 0.3V to chassis ground

A signal pin reading above 4.5V or near supply voltage confirms a short or failed sensor.

Step 4 — Replace or Repair Replace the oil pressure sensor if voltage checks confirm an internal fault. If wiring damage is found, repair the harness using proper Deutsch connector repair kits and re-test.
