Caterpillar Excavator Fault Code 1141-5: Meaning, Symptoms & Fix
What is Caterpillar Fault Code 1141-5?
Caterpillar Fault Code 1141-5 indicates a "Fan Solenoid – Current Below Normal," meaning the ECM has detected an open circuit or abnormally low current in the fan speed control solenoid circuit.
This fault is directly tied to the hydraulic fan drive solenoid, which regulates cooling fan speed based on engine and hydraulic oil temperature demands. On Caterpillar machines, the ECM continuously monitors solenoid current output — when it falls below the expected threshold, this diagnostic code is triggered.
This is a critical fault because an improperly functioning fan solenoid can lead to engine overheating, reduced hydraulic system efficiency, and potential long-term thermal damage — especially under heavy load conditions.
Common Symptoms
When Fault Code 1141-5 is active, operators may experience:
- Active warning lamp or amber alert on the machine's monitor display
- Fan running at fixed maximum speed (failsafe mode) or conversely, running too slow
- Engine coolant or hydraulic oil temperatures rising beyond normal operating range
- Reduced machine performance due to the ECM entering a protective derate mode
- Unusual fan noise or inconsistent fan speed response during operation
Potential Causes
The most common technical causes for this fault include:
- Open circuit in the fan solenoid wiring harness — a frequent issue on used machines where harness routing causes wire chafing against the frame or hoses
- Failed or burned fan speed control solenoid — internal coil failure resulting in loss of electrical continuity
- Corroded or damaged connector pins at the solenoid or ECM connector, common in high-hour, older equipment
- Broken wire within the harness, often near flex points or cable clamps
- Faulty ECM output driver — less common but possible on machines with a history of electrical issues
How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 1141-5
Step 1 – Visual Inspection First Begin with a thorough physical inspection of the fan solenoid harness. On used excavators, pay close attention to areas where the harness contacts the frame, hydraulic lines, or heat sources. Look for chafing, cracking insulation, or pinched wires. Inspect the solenoid connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion.
Step 2 – Resistance Check on the Solenoid Disconnect the solenoid connector and use a digital multimeter to measure the solenoid coil resistance. Typical acceptable resistance for Cat fan solenoids ranges between 6–20 ohms depending on the model spec. A reading of infinite resistance (OL) confirms an open coil — replace the solenoid.
Step 3 – Harness Continuity Test With the harness disconnected at both the solenoid and ECM, perform a continuity test on each wire in the circuit. Use Cat's ET (Electronic Technician) diagnostic software to verify active fault status, review parameter data, and confirm the ECM is commanding the correct output signal.
Step 4 – Connector and ECM Pin Inspection Inspect ECM-side connector pins for corrosion or push-back. Apply electrical contact cleaner and use a pin repair kit if needed before condemning the ECM.

Fault Description:
There is an open circuit in the circuit of the bucket cylinder extending out of the solenoid valve
