Fault Codes:Caterpillar General 1658-4

What is Caterpillar Fault Code 1658-4?

Caterpillar Fault Code 1658-4 indicates a low voltage condition detected on the Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor circuit, signaling that the signal voltage has dropped below the acceptable threshold defined by the Engine/Machine Control Module (ECM).

This code falls under the Cat diagnostic framework as a Component Identifier (CID) 1658 with Failure Mode Identifier (FMI) 4, meaning the ECM is reading a signal that is shorted to ground or has lost proper reference voltage. On Caterpillar excavators and heavy equipment, the transmission oil temperature sensor plays a critical role in protecting drivetrain components from thermal damage and ensuring proper hydraulic and mechanical performance.

Common Symptoms

When fault code 1658-4 is active, operators typically experience:

  • Active warning lamp illuminated on the main display or monitor panel
  • Transmission derate mode or limited machine performance to protect drivetrain components
  • Inaccurate or frozen temperature readings on the operator display
  • Possible automatic machine shutdown if the ECM cannot verify safe operating temperatures
  • Reduced responsiveness in hydraulic travel or swing functions tied to transmission protection logic

Potential Causes

Several technical factors commonly trigger this fault, especially on used or high-hour machines:

  • Shorted sensor wire — signal wire grounded against the chassis or frame due to harness chafing
  • Failed temperature sensor — internal short within the sensor itself causing low voltage output
  • Corroded or damaged connector pins at the sensor harness plug, common in machines exposed to moisture and dirt
  • Damaged wiring harness from known rub points near hydraulic lines or frame edges
  • ECM pin corrosion or moisture intrusion at the machine control module connector

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 1658-4

Step 1 — Perform a Visual Harness Inspection Begin by tracing the wiring harness from the transmission oil temperature sensor back to the ECM. On used excavators, pay close attention to areas where the harness runs near sharp frame edges, hydraulic hose bundles, or heat sources. Look for worn insulation, pinch points, or signs of previous repairs.

Step 2 — Inspect the Connector and Sensor Disconnect the sensor connector and inspect all pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals. Use electrical contact cleaner and a pin inspection tool. With a multimeter, measure the sensor resistance at operating temperature — a healthy Cat transmission oil temperature sensor typically reads within a defined resistance range (consult your Cat SIS manual for exact values).

Step 3 — Check Circuit Voltage Using Cat ET (Electronic Technician) diagnostic software, monitor the live sensor signal voltage with the connector plugged in. The signal circuit should read approximately 0.5V–4.5V under normal conditions. A reading near 0V confirms a short to ground in the circuit or a failed sensor.

Step 4 — Repair or Replace Repair any damaged wiring, replace corroded terminals, or install a new OEM-spec temperature sensor if resistance values are out of range.
