Caterpillar Excavator Fault Code 266-4: Meaning, Symptoms & Fix
What is Caterpillar Fault Code 266-4?
Caterpillar Fault Code 266-4 indicates a low voltage condition on the 8-volt sensor supply circuit, specifically affecting the sensor power supply managed by the Engine Control Module (ECM).
This code is triggered when the ECM detects that the 8-volt DC reference supply voltage — which powers multiple critical sensors simultaneously — has dropped below the acceptable threshold. On Caterpillar machines, this single supply circuit typically feeds sensors including the throttle position sensor, boost pressure sensor, and other analog inputs.
Because multiple sensors share this supply line, a fault here can cascade into several false readings across systems, making it a high-priority diagnostic concern on any machine.
Common Symptoms
When Fault Code 266-4 is active, operators typically experience:
- Warning lights illuminating on the monitor panel, often accompanied by multiple simultaneous fault codes
- Engine derate mode activating, limiting RPM and power output
- Erratic throttle response or loss of throttle control
- Hydraulic performance degradation due to incorrect sensor feedback to the ECM
- Engine shutdown in severe cases where the ECM loses confidence in sensor data
Potential Causes
The most common root causes for this fault code include:
- Short circuit to ground within the 8-volt supply wiring harness
- Damaged or corroded sensor connectors, particularly common on used excavators with high hours
- A failed sensor drawing excessive current and pulling the supply voltage down
- Chafed or pinched wiring harness at known friction points near the engine block or firewall
- Internal ECM failure, though this is the least common cause and should only be considered after all wiring is verified
How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 266-4
Step 1: Perform a Visual Harness Inspection Before any electrical testing, physically inspect the entire sensor supply harness. On used excavators, pay close attention to harness routing near sharp metal edges, exhaust components, and bulkhead pass-throughs where insulation wear is most prevalent. Check all connectors for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or bent pins.
Step 2: Measure Supply Voltage at the ECM Using a digital multimeter, back-probe the 8-volt supply wire at the ECM connector with the key-on and engine off. A healthy reading should be 7.5–8.5 volts DC. A reading significantly below this confirms the low voltage condition is present.
Step 3: Isolate the Faulty Component Disconnect each sensor on the 8-volt supply circuit one at a time while monitoring voltage. When voltage returns to normal after disconnecting a specific sensor, that component is likely shorted internally. Use Cat ET (Electronic Technician) diagnostic software to monitor live sensor data and confirm readings during this process.
Step 4: Repair or Replace Repair any damaged wiring or connectors using proper splice kits. Replace confirmed faulty sensors. Only replace the ECM after all external causes have been definitively ruled out.

Fault Description:
When turning the wheel, the injection input voltage was not lower than the normal value
