What is Caterpillar Fault Code 2913-3?

Caterpillar Fault Code 2913-3 indicates a "Voltage Above Normal" condition on the Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor circuit (also referenced as the Implement Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor – High Voltage).

This code is triggered when the ECM (Engine Control Module) detects that the signal voltage returning from the hydraulic oil temperature sensor has exceeded the expected upper threshold — typically above 4.8V DC on a 5V reference circuit.

On Caterpillar excavators, accurate hydraulic oil temperature monitoring is critical for protecting the hydraulic pump, control valves, and final drive components from thermal damage. An unreliable sensor signal can compromise automatic cooling fan control and machine protection systems.


Common Symptoms

When Fault Code 2913-3 is active, operators typically report the following:

  • Active warning light or alert indicator illuminated on the monitor display
  • Hydraulic performance degradation or conservative fan speed operation as a protective response
  • The Cat ET (Electronic Technician) diagnostic tool shows a fixed or pegged high-temperature reading regardless of actual oil temperature
  • Possible intermittent derate mode on machines with integrated machine protection logic
  • Operator monitor displaying an abnormal or frozen temperature value (often maxed out)

Potential Causes

The following are the most common root causes for this fault, especially on used or high-hour Caterpillar excavators:

  • Open circuit in the sensor signal wire — breaks the return path, driving voltage high
  • Failed hydraulic oil temperature sensor — internal short to the 5V reference line
  • Damaged or corroded wiring harness connectors at the sensor or ECM pin locations
  • Chafed or pinched harness routing near hydraulic lines or frame edges (common on older machines)
  • ECM connector corrosion or pin damage causing a false high-voltage reading

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 2913-3

Step 1 – Connect Cat ET Diagnostic Software Connect Cat Electronic Technician (ET) to the machine's service port. Confirm the active fault and monitor the live sensor voltage. A reading consistently above 4.8V with the machine at normal temperature confirms the fault is genuine, not intermittent.

Step 2 – Inspect the Harness and Connectors On used excavators, physically trace the sensor harness from the hydraulic tank sensor to the ECM. Look for chafing, corrosion, cracked insulation, or loose pins. Pay close attention to areas where the harness contacts the frame or hydraulic hose bundles — these are high-wear friction points common on aged machines.

Step 3 – Perform Voltage and Continuity Checks Using a digital multimeter, backprobe the sensor connector:

  • Supply wire: Should read ~5V DC
  • Signal wire: Should read 0.5V–4.5V depending on temperature
  • Ground wire: Should read less than 0.3V

An open signal circuit will show 5V or higher — replace the sensor or repair the wiring accordingly.

Step 4 – Replace the Sensor if Wiring is Intact If harness and connectors test good, replace the hydraulic oil temperature sensor. Clear the fault with Cat ET and perform a functional test to confirm resolution.
