Caterpillar Fault Code 586-5: Meaning, Symptoms, and Fix

What is Caterpillar Fault Code 586-5?

Caterpillar fault code 586-5 indicates a "Transmission Solenoid Valve #6 – Current Below Normal," meaning the ECM has detected an open circuit or insufficient current flow in the solenoid valve #6 control circuit.

This code falls under the electrical current diagnostic category, where the ECM (Engine Control Module) monitors amperage output to the solenoid. When current drops below the expected threshold, the ECM logs this active fault and may restrict machine operation to protect drivetrain components.

On Caterpillar equipment, solenoid valve circuits are critical for precise hydraulic and transmission control. A fault in this circuit can directly impact machine productivity and, if ignored, lead to accelerated component wear.

Common Symptoms

When fault code 586-5 is active, operators may experience:

  • Warning lamp illumination on the operator display panel
  • Transmission derate or lockout, limiting gear selection or travel speed
  • Sluggish or unresponsive machine movement, particularly during directional changes
  • Intermittent transmission slipping under load conditions
  • Active fault logged in Cat ET diagnostic software during system scan

Potential Causes

The most likely technical causes for this fault include:

  • Open circuit in the solenoid valve #6 wiring harness
  • Corroded or damaged connector pins at the solenoid or ECM connector
  • Failed solenoid coil with resistance outside specification (typically open or extremely high resistance)
  • Chafed or broken wiring caused by harness rub points near frame edges or moving components
  • Faulty ECM output driver — less common but possible on high-hour machines

On used excavators and older Caterpillar equipment, harness degradation and connector corrosion are the leading causes before solenoid replacement is even considered.

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 586-5

Step 1 – Connect Cat ET Diagnostic Software Use Caterpillar ET (Electronic Technician) software to confirm the active fault, check ECM parameter data, and review fault history. Identify whether the fault is active or intermittent, as this guides your inspection priority.

Step 2 – Inspect the Wiring Harness and Connectors Physically trace the solenoid #6 harness from the ECM to the solenoid valve. On used machines, pay close attention to known rub points near the frame, bulkheads, and rotating components. Look for chafing, cracking, or moisture intrusion. Clean all connector pins and inspect for corrosion or pushed-back terminals.

Step 3 – Measure Solenoid Resistance Disconnect the solenoid connector and use a digital multimeter to measure coil resistance. Compare readings against Caterpillar specifications (typically 4–25 ohms depending on application). An open reading (OL) confirms a failed solenoid coil requiring replacement.

Step 4 – Check Circuit Voltage and Continuity With the harness reconnected and key-on, measure supply voltage at the solenoid connector. Then perform a continuity test back to the ECM connector to rule out an open wire condition.

Step 5 – Replace and Retest Replace confirmed failed components — solenoid or harness section — and clear faults using Cat ET. Perform an operational test to confirm the fault does not return.

Always consult official Caterpillar service documentation and a certified heavy equipment technician before performing repairs. Improper diagnosis or repair can result in machine damage or personal injury.
