Caterpillar Fault Code 676-5: Meaning, Symptoms, and Fix

What is Caterpillar Fault Code 676-5?

Caterpillar Fault Code 676-5 indicates a "Ether Start Relay – Current Below Normal" condition. This means the ECM (Engine Control Module) has detected that the electrical current in the ether injection relay circuit is lower than the expected threshold during a commanded activation.

Specifically, this fault targets the ether start aid system, which assists cold-weather engine starting by injecting a small amount of ether into the intake manifold. The 676-5 designation follows SAE J1939 standards — component identifier 676 refers to the ether start relay, and the failure mode identifier "-5" signals current below normal, pointing to an open circuit or high-resistance condition.

While this fault won't immediately disable your machine, ignoring it in cold operating environments can result in hard starts, extended cranking, and unnecessary engine wear.

Common Symptoms

  • Check Engine or warning lamp illuminated on the operator display
  • Difficulty starting the engine in cold ambient temperatures (below 0°C / 32°F)
  • Extended cranking cycles before the engine fires
  • Active or logged fault code visible through Cat ET diagnostic software
  • Possible engine derate on certain configurations if additional fault codes are triggered simultaneously

Potential Causes

  • Open circuit in the ether relay control wiring between the ECM and relay
  • Failed or burned-out ether start relay — common on high-hour used machines
  • Corroded or loose connectors at the relay socket or ECM harness plug
  • Chafed or broken wiring harness, particularly in areas prone to vibration rub near the firewall or engine bay brackets
  • Faulty ECM output driver — less common but possible on older units with high operating hours

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 676-5

Step 1 – Connect Cat ET Diagnostic Software Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) to confirm the active fault, check freeze frame data, and monitor the relay command status. Verify the ECM is commanding the relay ON during a cold start attempt.

Step 2 – Inspect the Relay and Connector Locate the ether start relay in the relay panel or fuse box. On used excavators, prioritize checking for corrosion, moisture intrusion, and heat damage on the relay socket pins. Use a multimeter to test relay coil resistance — a healthy relay coil typically reads 70–90 ohms. An open reading confirms relay failure.

Step 3 – Check the Wiring Harness Trace the control harness from the ECM to the relay. Use a multimeter in continuity mode to check for open circuits or high resistance (>2 ohms indicates a problem). On used equipment, pay close attention to harness rub points near metal brackets and engine mounts where insulation commonly wears through.

Step 4 – Verify ECM Output If the relay and wiring test good, backprobe the ECM output pin with a multimeter during a start command. Expect battery voltage (~24V) on the signal wire. No voltage may indicate an internal ECM driver failure.

Step 5 – Replace and Retest Replace any failed component, clear the code with Cat ET, and perform a cold start cycle to confirm the repair.

Disclaimer: This guide is intended for informational purposes and general diagnostic direction. Always consult a certified Caterpillar dealer or licensed heavy equipment technician for final diagnosis and repair, especially when ECM-level faults are suspected. Improper repairs can void warranties and create safety hazards.
