What is Caterpillar Fault Code 7134?

Caterpillar Fault Code 7134 indicates a failed or abnormal signal from the Engine Oil Pressure Sensor, specifically relating to an open or short circuit condition detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM).

This code is triggered when the ECM receives a voltage signal from the engine oil pressure sensor that falls outside the acceptable calibrated range — either too high or too low — suggesting a sensor, wiring, or supply voltage fault rather than an actual oil pressure event.

Step 1 — Retrieve and Document Active Codes Connect Cat Electronic Technician (Cat ET) software via the service port. Record all active and logged fault codes. Note freeze-frame data to identify if the fault is intermittent or permanent — this helps isolate whether the issue is vibration- or temperature-related.

Step 2 — Inspect the Harness and Connectors On used excavators, physically trace the engine oil pressure sensor harness from sensor to ECM before touching any components. Look for worn insulation, heat damage, or chafe points near exhaust components and frame brackets. Inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins. Clean connectors with electrical contact cleaner and a pin probe tool.

Step 3 — Test the Sensor Circuit Using a multimeter, verify:

  • Supply voltage at the sensor connector: typically 5V DC reference signal
  • Signal wire continuity from sensor to ECM pin (should show near-zero resistance)
  • Ground circuit resistance: should be less than 2 ohms

An open or out-of-range reading confirms a wiring or connector fault rather than a sensor failure.

Step 4 — Test or Replace the Sensor If wiring checks pass, substitute the oil pressure sensor with a known-good OEM Caterpillar replacement. Avoid aftermarket sensors on critical oil circuit monitoring applications, as calibration tolerances may differ.
