Fault Codes:Caterpillar General EID1538
What is Caterpillar Fault Code EID1538?
Caterpillar Fault Code EID1538 indicates an Engine Inlet Air Temperature Sensor Circuit High Voltage condition. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered when the Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects a voltage reading from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor that exceeds the normal operating range, typically above 4.5-4.8 volts.
The IAT sensor plays a critical role in engine performance by measuring the temperature of air entering the combustion system. The ECM uses this data to calculate proper fuel injection timing, air-fuel ratios, and turbocharger boost levels. When EID1538 appears, the ECM defaults to a substitute value, which can compromise fuel efficiency, power output, and emissions compliance—particularly problematic in used excavators operating under demanding worksite conditions.
Common Symptoms
- Check Engine Light or warning lamp illuminated on the instrument cluster
- Noticeable power derate or reduced engine performance, especially under heavy load
- Rough idling or hesitation during acceleration due to incorrect fuel mapping
- Increased black smoke from the exhaust indicating rich fuel mixture
- Higher-than-normal fuel consumption as the ECM compensates for missing temperature data
Potential Causes
The most common causes of EID1538 in used Caterpillar excavators include:
- Open circuit in the IAT sensor wiring harness, often caused by wire chafing at known rub points near the air intake manifold
- Failed IAT sensor itself, with internal resistance degradation common in high-hour machines
- Corroded or damaged connector pins at the sensor or ECM interface due to moisture intrusion
- Short to battery voltage in the sensor signal wire from damaged insulation
- Faulty ECM (rare, but possible in machines with electrical system history)
How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code EID1538
Step 1: Visual Inspection Locate the IAT sensor on the intake manifold or air inlet piping. Inspect the wiring harness for visible damage, particularly at flex points and where harnesses contact metal surfaces. On used excavators, check for oil contamination, corrosion, or heat damage near the turbocharger area.
Step 2: Connector and Sensor Testing Disconnect the IAT sensor connector and inspect pins for corrosion or bent contacts. Using a digital multimeter, measure the sensor's resistance at ambient temperature (typically 2,000-3,000 ohms at 70°F). Compare readings to Caterpillar specifications using Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) software.
Step 3: Circuit Voltage Testing With the sensor disconnected and ignition on, measure voltage at the ECM side of the harness connector. You should see approximately 5 volts on the signal wire. If voltage reads battery voltage (12-24V), there's a short to power in the harness requiring repair or replacement.
Step 4: Repair or Replace Replace the IAT sensor if resistance values are out of specification. Repair any damaged wiring, ensuring proper heat-resistant wire loom protection. Clear codes with Cat ET and perform a test cycle.

Fault Description:
Excessive pressurization cycle of the inter-shaft lock accumulator
Fault Cause:
EID (Event Code or Event Identifier) : Identifies important events that occur in the machine system. ECM/ECU can store (record) the data of these events. This function allows for the tracking of the machine's performance history. This data can serve as auxiliary information for managers, maintenance and repair personnel.
