Fault Codes:Caterpillar General SPN1507

What is Caterpillar Fault Code SPN 1507?

SPN 1507 indicates a problem with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Differential Pressure Sensor or its circuit. This sensor measures the pressure difference across the EGR cooler to monitor exhaust gas flow and ensure proper emissions control system operation.

In Caterpillar diesel engines, the EGR system recirculates a portion of exhaust gases back into the intake manifold to reduce combustion temperatures and lower nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. The differential pressure sensor is critical because it tells the Electronic Control Module (ECM) whether the EGR system is functioning correctly. If the sensor fails or provides inaccurate readings, the ECM cannot properly regulate EGR flow, potentially causing performance issues, increased emissions, and engine derate conditions. For used excavators, this code often appears due to sensor degradation, carbon buildup affecting pressure readings, or wiring issues from years of vibration and heat exposure.

Common Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light or Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated on the dashboard
  • Engine derate mode activated, limiting machine power and hydraulic performance
  • Rough idling or hesitation during acceleration, especially under load
  • Increased black or gray smoke from the exhaust indicating incomplete combustion
  • Diagnostic trouble codes stored in the ECM memory, retrievable via Cat ET or compatible scan tool

Potential Causes

  • EGR differential pressure sensor failure due to age, carbon contamination, or internal component wear
  • Clogged or restricted EGR cooler causing abnormal pressure readings across the sensor
  • Damaged wiring harness or corroded connectors, common in used machines with engine bay heat cycling
  • Blocked EGR valve or passages preventing proper exhaust gas recirculation
  • ECM calibration issues or software glitches requiring reprogramming
  • Pressure line blockages or leaks in the small rubber hoses connecting the sensor to the EGR system

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code SPN 1507

Step 1: Connect Diagnostic Software Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) or a compatible diagnostic tool to read active and stored codes. Record all freeze frame data to understand operating conditions when the fault occurred.

Step 2: Inspect Sensor and Connections Locate the EGR differential pressure sensor on the engine block near the EGR cooler. Carefully inspect the electrical connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion—common in used excavators. Check the two small pressure sensing hoses for cracks, blockages, or disconnection.

Step 3: Test Sensor Electrical Circuit Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to check supply voltage (typically 5 volts) and ground continuity at the harness connector. Measure sensor resistance according to Caterpillar specifications; values outside the acceptable range indicate sensor failure.

Step 4: Clean or Replace Components Remove carbon deposits from pressure sensing ports using appropriate EGR cleaner. If the EGR cooler shows heavy restriction, professional cleaning or replacement may be necessary. For used machines, always inspect wiring harness routing for rub points against engine components that could cause intermittent shorts.

Step 5: Clear Codes and Test After repairs, clear fault codes using diagnostic software and perform a complete operational test under load to verify proper EGR system function.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general troubleshooting information. Always consult Caterpillar service manuals and qualified diesel technicians for your specific machine model and serial number before performing repairs.

Fault Description:

Adjust the speed of the discharge threshing drum when it is out of service

Fault Cause:

SPN (Suspicious Parameter Number) : FMI is used in conjunction with SPN to provide specific information related to the Fault Diagnosis Code (DTC). The FMI may indicate faults in circuits or electrical components that have been detected before. FMI may also indicate the abnormal operation conditions that have been detected before. This code is displayed in the form of "SPN-FMI". The ECM/ECU also attaches the textual description to the information transmitted through the J1939 data link. This text description is used to describe SPN-FMI. Determine the failure mode of the DTC by evaluating the electrical signals of the suspicious circuit. Failure mode identifiers can be divided into two types: A code indicating a detected fault in a circuit or electrical component 1183. Code indicating system events was detected Usually, when the signal of the circuit exceeds the range of the sensor, the first type of code is generated. The code of the second category indicates that the sensor signal is normal, but the signal exceeds the normal working range of the parameters. Please refer to the troubleshooting guide for the specific product. The troubleshooting guide steps will help determine the root cause of the DTC
