Fault Codes:Caterpillar General SPN2339

What is Caterpillar Fault Code SPN2339?

SPN 2339 indicates a malfunction in the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Differential Pressure Sensor circuit. This Suspect Parameter Number monitors the pressure difference across the DPF to determine soot loading levels and trigger regeneration cycles when necessary.

The differential pressure sensor measures exhaust backpressure before and after the DPF canister. When the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects abnormal voltage signals, open circuits, or short circuits from this sensor, it logs SPN 2339. This code is critical for Caterpillar diesel engines because inaccurate DPF pressure readings can prevent proper regeneration cycles, leading to excessive soot buildup, reduced engine performance, and potential DPF damage. On used excavators, this sensor circuit is particularly vulnerable to heat damage, corrosion, and wiring deterioration from prolonged exposure to exhaust temperatures.

Common Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light or Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) warning illuminated on the operator display
  • Engine derate or reduced power output, especially during heavy loads or extended operation
  • Frequent or failed regeneration attempts, with the DPF regeneration light flashing continuously
  • Excessive black smoke from the exhaust stack indicating incomplete combustion
  • ECM fault codes appearing alongside SPN 2339, such as DPF-related parameters or exhaust temperature sensor faults

Potential Causes

  • Damaged or corroded wiring harness at the DPF pressure sensor connector, common on machines operating in wet or corrosive environments
  • Failed differential pressure sensor due to carbon buildup on sensor ports or internal electronic failure
  • Plugged or restricted sensor hoses connecting the DPF to the pressure sensor, especially on high-hour used machines
  • Broken or melted sensor wiring from excessive exhaust heat exposure near the DPF canister
  • ECM connector issues or faulty ECM pins related to the pressure sensor circuit
  • Improper sensor installation or loose mounting after previous maintenance on used equipment

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code SPN2339

Step 1: Visual Inspection Inspect the DPF differential pressure sensor and its wiring harness for obvious damage, melted insulation, or corroded connectors. On used excavators, check for harness rub points against the frame or exhaust components. Examine the sensor hoses for cracks, kinks, or carbon blockages.

Step 2: Electrical Testing Using a digital multimeter, check the sensor supply voltage at the connector (typically 5 volts from the ECM). Test sensor signal voltage at idle and compare to manufacturer specifications (usually 0.5-4.5 volts depending on pressure). Check circuit resistance and ground continuity to identify open or short circuits.

Step 3: Sensor and Hose Service Remove the pressure sensor and inspect mounting ports on the DPF for carbon accumulation. Clean sensor hoses with compressed air or replace if deteriorated. On high-hour machines, corrosion inside sensor ports is common—clean thoroughly before reinstallation.

Step 4: Component Replacement If electrical tests confirm sensor failure, replace the differential pressure sensor with genuine Caterpillar parts. Clear codes using Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) diagnostic software and perform a stationary regeneration to verify proper operation.

Fault Description:

Auxiliary valve 15 status

Fault Cause:

SPN (Suspicious Parameter Number) : FMI is used in conjunction with SPN to provide specific information related to the Fault Diagnosis Code (DTC). The FMI may indicate faults in circuits or electrical components that have been detected before. FMI may also indicate the abnormal operation conditions that have been detected before. This code is displayed in the form of "SPN-FMI". The ECM/ECU also attaches the textual description to the information transmitted through the J1939 data link. This text description is used to describe SPN-FMI. Determine the failure mode of the DTC by evaluating the electrical signals of the suspicious circuit. Failure mode identifiers can be divided into two types: A code indicating a detected fault in a circuit or electrical component 2011. Code indicating system events was detected Usually, when the signal of the circuit exceeds the range of the sensor, the first type of code is generated. The code of the second category indicates that the sensor signal is normal, but the signal exceeds the normal working range of the parameters. Please refer to the troubleshooting guide for the specific product. The troubleshooting guide steps will help determine the root cause of the DTC
