Hitachi Excavator Fault Code 10006-1: Meaning, Symptoms & Fix
What is Hitachi Excavator Fault Code 10006-1?
Hitachi fault code 10006-1 indicates a detected abnormality in the engine controller (ECM) power supply voltage circuit — specifically, a low voltage or power supply fault within the engine control system.
This code is generated when the ECM (Engine Control Module) detects that its primary supply voltage has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold, typically below 18V DC on a 24V system. The ECM monitors its own power input continuously, and any sustained voltage drop triggers this fault.
On Hitachi machines, this is a critical fault because the ECM governs fuel injection timing, engine protection logic, and communication with the machine's main controller (MC). A compromised power supply to the ECM can result in unpredictable engine behavior or a complete no-start condition.
Common Symptoms
When fault code 10006-1 is active, operators typically report:
- Warning lamp illumination on the monitor panel, often accompanied by an audible alarm
- Engine derating or sudden shutdown as the ECM enters a protective state
- Intermittent stalling or hard starting, particularly in cold conditions
- Loss of communication between the ECM and the machine monitor (blank or frozen display)
- Erratic throttle response or inability to reach full engine RPM
Potential Causes
The following are the most likely technical causes of this fault, especially on used or high-hour Hitachi excavators:
- Weak or failing batteries — voltage sag under load is the #1 cause on aging machines
- Corroded or loose battery terminals and ground straps — common on machines operating in muddy or wet environments
- Damaged ECM power supply harness — wiring chafing against the frame near the firewall or battery tray is a known wear point on Hitachi models
- Faulty main relay or fusible link — the ECM power relay can fail intermittently on high-cycle machines
- Poor chassis ground connection at the ECM mounting bracket or engine block
How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 10006-1
Step 1 — Battery and Charging System Check Using a digital multimeter, measure battery voltage at rest (should be ≥12.6V per battery / ≥25.2V combined on 24V systems) and under crank load. Test alternator output at high idle — target 27.5–28.5V DC. Replace weak batteries before proceeding.
Step 2 — Inspect Ground Straps and Power Terminals Physically inspect all battery cables, chassis grounds, and ECM ground points. On used excavators, look for green corrosion, frayed insulation, and loose terminal bolts. Clean terminals with a wire brush and apply dielectric grease.
Step 3 — Trace the ECM Power Supply Harness Follow the ECM harness from the battery/fuse box to the ECM connector. On Hitachi machines, pay close attention to routing points near the hydraulic pump compartment and firewall grommets — these are known chafing locations. Repair or replace any damaged sections.
Step 4 — Check Main Relay and Fusible Links Test the ECM power relay using a multimeter or relay tester. Inspect all fusible links in the main fuse block for heat damage or partial failure.
Step 5 — Use Diagnostic Software Connect Hitachi Dr. ZX diagnostic software to read live ECM supply voltage data and confirm the fault is resolved after repairs. Clear the code and perform a full system check.

Always consult a certified Hitachi dealer or licensed heavy equipment mechanic before performing electrical repairs on your machine. Incorrect diagnosis or repair can result in further damage or safety hazards.
