Hitachi ZH200-5A Fault Code P0117: Technical Guide
What is Hitachi ZH200-5A Fault Code P0117?
Fault Code P0117 indicates an Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit Low Input voltage condition. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects a signal voltage from the ECT sensor that falls below the manufacturer's specified threshold, typically below 0.14 volts.
The ECT sensor is a critical component in the Hitachi ZH200-5A's Isuzu engine management system. It monitors coolant temperature and sends real-time data to the ECM, which adjusts fuel injection timing, idle speed, and cooling fan operation accordingly. When this sensor circuit fails low, the ECM cannot accurately control engine temperature management, potentially leading to inefficient combustion, excessive emissions, and thermal stress on engine components.
Common Symptoms
- Check Engine Light illuminated on the instrument panel with reduced engine performance
- Hard starting conditions, especially when the engine is cold, due to incorrect fuel mixture calculations
- Poor fuel economy and black exhaust smoke from incomplete combustion
- Cooling fan runs continuously at maximum speed, even when engine is cold
- Engine may operate in limp mode with reduced power output to prevent potential damage
Potential Causes
The P0117 code on used Hitachi ZH200-5A excavators typically results from age-related component degradation:
- Faulty ECT sensor with internal short circuit or deteriorated thermistor element
- Damaged wiring harness near the engine block where vibration causes wire insulation to wear through
- Corroded or loose connector terminals at the sensor plug, common in machines exposed to moisture
- Shorted sensor ground circuit due to harness rubbing against engine components or frame
- ECM internal fault (rare, but possible in high-hour machines with electrical system history)
How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code P0117
Step 1: Visual Inspection Begin by inspecting the ECT sensor connector located near the thermostat housing. Check for corrosion, moisture intrusion, pushed-back pins, or damaged seals. On used excavators, examine the wiring harness routing for signs of abrasion, especially where it contacts the engine block or passes through protective looms.
Step 2: Electrical Testing Using a digital multimeter (DMM), disconnect the ECT sensor and measure resistance across its terminals. At 68°F (20°C), resistance should read approximately 2,400-2,700 ohms (consult service manual for exact specifications). Next, check for continuity to ground on the sensor signal wire with the connector disconnected—there should be infinite resistance (open circuit).
Step 3: Circuit Voltage Check With ignition on and sensor disconnected, measure voltage at the ECM side of the harness connector. You should see approximately 5 volts reference voltage on the signal wire. If voltage is absent, trace the circuit back toward the ECM for opens or shorts.
Step 4: Repair or Replace Replace the ECT sensor if resistance values are out of specification. If sensor tests good, repair or replace the damaged harness section. For used machines, always apply dielectric grease to connectors during reassembly to prevent future corrosion. Clear codes with Hitachi diagnostic software and verify repair with a test cycle.
Disclaimer: This guide provides general troubleshooting information. Always consult the official Hitachi service manual for your specific machine serial number and seek professional assistance for complex electrical diagnostics or if you lack proper training and tools.
