Fault Codes:Hyundai Training materials 2249

What is Hyundai Excavator Fault Code 2249?

Fault Code 2249 indicates a malfunction in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit - Voltage High condition. This diagnostic trouble code triggers when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally high voltage signal from the coolant temperature sensor, typically above 4.8 volts, when normal operating range should be between 0.5-4.5 volts.

This code is critical for Hyundai excavators because the ECT sensor provides essential data for fuel injection timing, engine warm-up cycles, and fan activation. When the ECM receives inaccurate temperature readings, it can cause improper fuel delivery, increased emissions, and potential engine protection mode activation. For used excavators operating in demanding conditions, this sensor's reliability directly impacts fuel efficiency and prevents costly engine damage from overheating.

Common Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light or malfunction indicator illuminated on the instrument panel
  • Engine running in limp mode or derate condition with reduced power output
  • Difficulty starting, especially cold starts, or excessive cranking time
  • Cooling fan running continuously at high speed regardless of actual engine temperature
  • Rough idle or poor throttle response during operation
  • Increased fuel consumption due to ECM defaulting to cold-start enrichment values

Potential Causes

The most common technical causes for Code 2249 in used Hyundai excavators include:

  • Open circuit in the ECT sensor wiring harness, often due to wire chafing near engine mounting points or valve covers
  • Failed coolant temperature sensor with internal resistance breakdown (common after 5,000+ operating hours)
  • Corroded or loose electrical connectors at the sensor or ECM harness interface
  • Damaged sensor ground circuit causing voltage reference issues
  • ECM internal fault affecting the 5-volt reference supply (rare but possible in high-hour machines)
  • Previous improper repairs using incorrect sensor specifications or aftermarket components

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 2249

Step 1: Visual Inspection Inspect the ECT sensor connector located on the engine block (typically near the thermostat housing). Check for corrosion, moisture intrusion, bent pins, or physical damage. On used excavators, examine the entire wiring harness routing for friction points, especially where it contacts the engine block or passes through grommets.

Step 2: Electrical Testing Using a digital multimeter, disconnect the ECT sensor connector and measure resistance across the sensor terminals. At room temperature (20°C/68°F), resistance should read approximately 2,000-3,000 ohms. Also check continuity between the sensor ground and chassis ground. Measure voltage at the ECM connector side—you should see approximately 5 volts on the signal wire with sensor disconnected.

Step 3: Component Replacement and Verification If voltage reads 5V at the harness but the sensor resistance is out of specification, replace the coolant temperature sensor with OEM Hyundai parts. After replacement, clear codes using diagnostic software (Hi-SCANPro or compatible interface) and perform a test cycle. For persistent codes, inspect ECM connections and consider harness repair at wear points before ECM replacement.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general diagnostic information. Always consult your Hyundai service manual and qualified diesel technicians for machine-specific procedures. Improper diagnosis may lead to unnecessary part replacement or equipment damage.

Fault Description:

The fuel injector measures the pressure of oil track 1 - the data is valid but extremely lower than the normal working range value. The ECM detected that the fuel pressure was lower than the command pressure value. The engine may be difficult to start.
