Fault Codes:Komatsu General E422
What is Komatsu Fault Code E422?
Komatsu Fault Code E422 indicates a malfunction in the hydraulic oil temperature sensor circuit, specifically detecting an abnormally high voltage signal or open circuit condition in the sensor wiring. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered when the Electronic Control Module (ECM) receives a voltage reading outside the normal operating range from the hydraulic oil temperature sensor, typically above 4.5 volts when the expected range is 0.5-4.5 volts.
This code is critical for Komatsu excavators because the hydraulic oil temperature directly affects system efficiency, component longevity, and machine protection. The ECM relies on accurate temperature data to manage engine load, activate cooling systems, and prevent hydraulic component damage from overheating. When E422 is active, the machine may enter a protective derate mode or display inaccurate temperature readings.
Common Symptoms
- Hydraulic oil temperature gauge displays maximum reading or dashes, regardless of actual oil temperature
- Warning light or alarm activates on the instrument cluster indicating hydraulic system issues
- Machine may enter derated mode, limiting hydraulic flow or engine RPM to protect components
- Cooling fan runs continuously at high speed, even during cold starts
- Intermittent loss of hydraulic power or sluggish operation as the ECM defaults to fail-safe parameters
Potential Causes
The most common causes for E422 on used Komatsu excavators include:
- Open circuit in the sensor wiring harness, often caused by wire breaks near flex points at the hydraulic tank or boom base
- Failed hydraulic oil temperature sensor, with internal element deterioration common in machines with 5,000+ operating hours
- Corroded or loose connector pins at the sensor or ECM connection points, especially in machines exposed to moisture
- Damaged sensor harness from rubbing against hydraulic lines or structural components during boom/arm movement
- ECM internal fault (less common) affecting the sensor input circuit
How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code E422
Step 1: Connect Komatsu diagnostic software (KOMTRAX or KDW) to read live sensor voltage. With ignition on and engine off, the sensor should read between 0.5-4.5 volts depending on oil temperature. A reading above 4.8 volts confirms high voltage/open circuit.
Step 2: Physically inspect the hydraulic oil temperature sensor located on the hydraulic tank. Check the connector for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion. Clean contacts with electrical cleaner and apply dielectric grease. On used excavators, this connector often shows green corrosion.
Step 3: Perform a resistance test on the sensor itself. Disconnect the sensor and measure resistance across its terminals with a multimeter. At 68°F (20°C), resistance should typically be 2,000-3,000 ohms (consult your specific service manual). Infinite resistance indicates sensor failure.
Step 4: Inspect the wiring harness from sensor to ECM, focusing on wear points where cables contact the hydraulic tank, frame rails, or pass through grommets. Use a multimeter to check for continuity and shorts to ground. Replace damaged sections with proper gauge wire and protect with abrasion-resistant sleeving.
Step 5: If all wiring and connections test normally, replace the hydraulic oil temperature sensor with a genuine Komatsu part. After replacement, clear the fault code and verify proper temperature readings during a complete heating cycle.
