Fault Codes:Komatsu General E445
What is Komatsu Fault Code E445?
Komatsu fault code E445 indicates an abnormal signal or malfunction in the hydraulic oil temperature sensor circuit. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) or machine controller detects a voltage reading outside the expected range from the hydraulic oil temperature sensor, typically due to an open circuit, short circuit, or sensor failure.
The hydraulic oil temperature sensor plays a critical role in protecting your Komatsu excavator's hydraulic system. It monitors fluid temperature to prevent overheating, which can cause accelerated component wear, seal degradation, and catastrophic pump or motor failure. When E445 activates, the machine may enter a derate mode or prevent certain high-demand functions to protect the hydraulic system from damage.
Common Symptoms
When fault code E445 is active, operators typically experience:
- Warning light or alarm illuminated on the instrument cluster, often accompanied by a hydraulic temperature icon
- Reduced hydraulic performance or limited machine functions as the controller implements protective derate
- Inaccurate temperature readings displayed on the monitor, showing unusually high, low, or erratic values
- Intermittent code activation, especially during machine warm-up or when operating in extreme temperatures
- Hydraulic system overheating going undetected if the sensor has failed in an open circuit condition
Potential Causes
The most common technical reasons for E445 appearing on used Komatsu excavators include:
- Faulty hydraulic oil temperature sensor due to internal element failure or contamination from degraded hydraulic fluid
- Damaged or corroded wiring harness and connectors, particularly at rub points near the hydraulic tank or along the main boom
- Broken or frayed sensor wires caused by vibration, improper routing during previous repairs, or contact with hot surfaces
- Corroded connector pins at the sensor plug or ECM connection points due to moisture intrusion or age-related deterioration
- ECM internal fault (rare) affecting the sensor input circuit or reference voltage supply
- Poor ground connection at the sensor mounting point or chassis ground strap
How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code E445
Step 1: Visual Inspection Begin by locating the hydraulic oil temperature sensor, typically mounted in the hydraulic tank or return line manifold. Inspect the sensor body, connector, and wiring harness for obvious damage, corrosion, oil contamination, or loose connections. On used excavators, pay special attention to harness rub points where wires contact the frame or hydraulic lines.
Step 2: Electrical Testing Disconnect the sensor connector and use a digital multimeter to measure sensor resistance. At room temperature (68°F/20°C), most Komatsu temperature sensors read between 2,000-3,000 ohms, decreasing as temperature rises. Compare your readings to the specifications in your service manual. Also check for continuity between sensor ground and chassis ground.
Step 3: Circuit Voltage Check With the sensor disconnected and ignition on, measure voltage at the harness connector. You should see approximately 5 volts reference voltage from the ECM. If voltage is absent or incorrect, trace the wiring back toward the ECM connector, checking for breaks or shorts to ground.
Step 4: Connector and Harness Repair Clean all connector pins with electrical contact cleaner and inspect for bent pins or corrosion. On used machines, connector corrosion is extremely common. Apply dielectric grease to protect against future moisture intrusion. Repair any damaged wiring using proper gauge wire and heat-shrink connections.
Step 5: Component Replacement If the sensor tests faulty, replace it with a genuine Komatsu or OEM-equivalent part. After installation, clear the fault code using Komatsu diagnostic software (KOMTRAX or dealer-level tools) and monitor for recurrence during a complete heating cycle.
Disclaimer: This guide provides general troubleshooting information. Always consult your Komatsu service manual for model-specific procedures and specifications. If you're uncomfortable performing electrical diagnostics, contact a certified Komatsu technician to prevent further damage to your machine.
