Fault Codes:Sany General P0641

What is Sany Excavator Fault Code P0641?

Fault Code P0641 indicates a Sensor Reference Voltage "A" Circuit Open condition in the Engine Control Module (ECM). This code triggers when the ECM detects an abnormal voltage reading in the 5-volt reference circuit that powers multiple critical sensors throughout the engine management system.

The 5-volt reference circuit serves as the power supply for sensors including the throttle position sensor, manifold absolute pressure sensor, and fuel rail pressure sensor. When this circuit fails, the ECM cannot receive accurate data from these sensors, severely impacting engine performance and fuel delivery. On Sany excavators, this is particularly critical because the integrated hydraulic and engine systems rely on precise sensor feedback for coordinated operation. A compromised reference voltage affects not just engine operation but also hydraulic responsiveness and machine productivity.

Common Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light or malfunction indicator lamp illuminated on the dashboard
  • Engine enters derate mode or limp mode, limiting power output to 50-70% of normal capacity
  • Rough idle, erratic engine RPM fluctuations, or unexpected stalling during operation
  • Poor throttle response and sluggish hydraulic system performance due to inaccurate sensor readings
  • Multiple sensor-related fault codes appearing simultaneously (P0122, P0107, P0193) alongside P0641

Potential Causes

The most common causes for P0641 in used Sany excavators include:

  • Damaged or corroded wiring harness, particularly at known rub points near the engine mounting brackets and along the chassis rail where vibration causes insulation wear
  • Corroded or loose connector pins at the ECM or individual sensor connectors, especially in machines with high hour counts or exposure to moisture
  • Failed ECM internal voltage regulator that supplies the 5-volt reference circuit
  • Shorted sensor pulling down the entire reference voltage circuit (one faulty sensor can affect all sensors on the same reference)
  • Broken or frayed wires in the engine harness due to age-related deterioration common in used equipment

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code P0641

Step 1: Visual Inspection Begin with a thorough inspection of the engine wiring harness. Check for obvious damage, melted insulation, or harness chafing at movement points. On used excavators, pay special attention to areas where the harness passes near hot exhaust components or sharp metal edges. Inspect all ECM connectors and sensor connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture intrusion.

Step 2: Voltage Testing Using a digital multimeter, backprobe the 5-volt reference circuit at the ECM connector with the key on, engine off. You should read 4.8-5.2 volts. If voltage is absent or significantly low, disconnect sensors one at a time while monitoring voltage. If voltage returns to normal after disconnecting a specific sensor, that sensor has an internal short.

Step 3: Circuit Continuity and Resistance Checks With the key off and ECM disconnected, check for continuity between the reference voltage wire and ground. Any continuity indicates a short to ground. Check resistance of the reference circuit from ECM to each sensor—it should read less than 5 ohms. High resistance indicates corroded connections or damaged wiring requiring repair or replacement.

Step 4: ECM Evaluation If all wiring and sensors test properly, the ECM's internal voltage regulator may have failed. This requires ECM replacement or professional repair. For used machines, consider having the ECM bench-tested before replacement to confirm the diagnosis.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general diagnostic procedures. Always consult the official Sany service manual for your specific model and serial number. If you're uncomfortable performing electrical diagnostics, consult a qualified heavy equipment technician to prevent further damage to electrical systems.
