Fault Codes:Sany General P498

What is Sany Excavator Fault Code P498?

Fault Code P498 indicates a malfunction in the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit - High Voltage condition. This code triggers when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally high voltage signal from the coolant temperature sensor, typically exceeding 4.8-4.9 volts for more than 2 seconds. In Sany excavators, this sensor monitors engine coolant temperature and sends critical data to the ECM to optimize fuel injection timing, throttle response, and prevent overheating damage.

This code is particularly critical because the ECM relies on accurate coolant temperature readings to protect the engine from thermal stress. When P498 activates, the system enters a default mode using substitute temperature values, which can significantly impact engine performance and fuel efficiency in used machines already experiencing wear.

Common Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light or malfunction indicator illuminated on the dashboard
  • Engine running rough or experiencing hard starting, especially when cold
  • Poor fuel economy and black smoke from exhaust due to incorrect fuel mixture
  • Engine fan running continuously at high speed regardless of actual temperature
  • Potential engine derate or power reduction mode to prevent perceived overheating

Potential Causes

The most common causes for P498 in used Sany excavators include:

  • Open circuit in the ECT sensor wiring harness, often from wire chafing against engine components or frame rails near the thermostat housing
  • Failed ECT sensor with internal open circuit (common failure mode in high-hour machines)
  • Corroded or damaged connector pins at the sensor or ECM connection points due to coolant leaks or moisture intrusion
  • Damaged ECM internal circuitry (rare but possible in older units with electrical system issues)
  • Broken or disconnected sensor ground wire creating false high-voltage reading

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code P498

Step 1: Visual Inspection Inspect the ECT sensor and wiring harness for obvious damage, corrosion, or coolant contamination. Check connector terminals for bent pins, corrosion, or moisture. In used excavators, pay special attention to harness routing where wires contact hot engine surfaces or sharp edges.

Step 2: Test Sensor Resistance Disconnect the ECT sensor connector and measure resistance across sensor terminals using a digital multimeter. At room temperature (68°F/20°C), resistance should read approximately 2,000-3,000 ohms. Compare readings against manufacturer specifications for your specific engine model.

Step 3: Check Circuit Voltage With ignition on and sensor disconnected, measure voltage at the harness connector (ECM side). You should see approximately 5 volts reference voltage. If voltage reads above 5 volts or battery voltage, suspect wiring issues or ECM problems.

Step 4: Inspect Wiring Continuity Test continuity between the sensor connector and ECM pins using wiring diagrams. Check for opens or shorts to power. For used machines, physically trace the harness for hidden damage from previous repairs or modifications.

Step 5: Replace Components If sensor tests fail specifications, replace the ECT sensor with OEM or quality equivalent parts. Clean connector terminals with electrical contact cleaner before reconnection. Clear codes using Sany diagnostic software and perform test operation.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general troubleshooting information. Always consult factory service manuals and qualified diesel technicians for complex electrical diagnostics. Improper repairs may cause additional damage or safety hazards.
