Sumitomo Excavator Fault Code P0238: Complete Diagnostic Guide

What is Sumitomo Excavator Fault Code P0238?

Fault Code P0238 indicates a Turbocharger Boost Sensor "A" Circuit High Input condition. This code triggers when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally high voltage signal from the boost pressure sensor (also called the manifold absolute pressure sensor or MAP sensor) that monitors turbocharger performance.

On Sumitomo excavators, this sensor is critical for managing engine performance, fuel injection timing, and preventing over-boost conditions that could damage the diesel engine. The ECM expects voltage readings within a specific range (typically 0.5-4.5 volts). When voltage exceeds the upper threshold, P0238 is stored, potentially limiting engine power to protect internal components.

Common Symptoms

When P0238 is active on your Sumitomo excavator, operators typically experience:

  • Check Engine Light (CEL) or malfunction indicator lamp illuminated on the dashboard
  • Engine derate or power reduction – noticeable loss of hydraulic performance and digging force
  • Black smoke from exhaust due to incorrect fuel-to-air ratio calculations
  • Turbocharger under-boost or complete lack of boost pressure during heavy loads
  • Rough idle or hesitation during acceleration, particularly under load

Potential Causes

The most common technical causes for P0238 on used Sumitomo excavators include:

  • Boost pressure sensor internal failure – sensor circuit shorted to voltage supply
  • Damaged or chafed wiring harness – common at harness rub points near the turbocharger or engine block
  • Corroded or moisture-contaminated sensor connector – especially on machines operating in wet environments
  • Faulty ECM (rare but possible on high-hour machines)
  • Intermittent short to battery voltage in the sensor signal wire
  • Previous repair attempts with incorrect sensor replacement or improper connector sealing

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code P0238

Step 1: Visual Inspection Locate the boost pressure sensor (typically mounted on the intake manifold). Inspect the wiring harness from sensor to ECM for obvious damage, abraded insulation, or pinch points. On used excavators, check for corrosion buildup on connector terminals and evidence of previous repairs with electrical tape.

Step 2: Electrical Testing Disconnect the sensor connector. Using a digital multimeter, measure voltage on the signal wire (refer to wiring diagram) with ignition ON, engine OFF. You should read approximately 5 volts (reference voltage from ECM). If reading is 12V or battery voltage, there's a short to power in the harness.

Step 3: Sensor Resistance Check Test sensor internal resistance according to Sumitomo specifications (typically 1-5 kΩ depending on model). Out-of-range readings indicate sensor failure. Before replacing, verify ground circuit continuity to the ECM.

Step 4: Repair and Verification Replace damaged components (sensor, harness sections, or connectors). For used machines, apply dielectric grease to connectors and secure harnesses away from heat sources. Clear codes using diagnostic software and perform a load test to verify repair.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general diagnostic information. Always consult Sumitomo service manuals and qualified diesel technicians for model-specific procedures. Improper repairs may cause further damage or safety hazards.
