Volvo Excavator Fault Code 187PPID14555: Meaning, Symptoms & Fix

What is Volvo Excavator Fault Code 187PPID14555?

Fault Code 187PPID14555 on Volvo excavators indicates a fault related to the battery voltage supply circuit, specifically a low voltage condition detected by the Engine Control Module (ECM) on a secondary or auxiliary power supply line (PID 145 = Battery Potential/Power Input).

This code is generated when the ECM detects that battery voltage has fallen below the acceptable operating threshold on a monitored power supply circuit. On Volvo machines, the SID/PID 145 parameter monitors direct battery potential feeding critical control modules.

This is a critical fault because unstable or low battery voltage can corrupt ECM data, disrupt CAN bus communication, and cause cascading faults across the hydraulic, engine, and monitoring systems.

Common Symptoms

When Fault Code 187PPID14555 is active, operators and technicians typically observe:

  • Amber or red warning lamp illuminated on the instrument cluster
  • Intermittent or complete loss of machine functions, including hydraulic response
  • Engine derating or unexpected shutdown due to ECM protection mode activation
  • Multiple simultaneous fault codes appearing, often indicating a system-wide voltage dropout
  • Difficulty starting or erratic behavior during cold starts or heavy load cycles

Potential Causes

The following are the most likely root causes, particularly on used or high-hour Volvo excavators:

  • Weak or failing batteries no longer holding adequate charge under load
  • Corroded or loose battery terminal connections causing voltage drop under demand
  • Damaged wiring harness — particularly common on older machines where harnesses rub against the frame near the engine compartment bulkhead
  • Faulty alternator failing to maintain proper charging voltage (should be 13.8V–14.5V at idle)
  • Corroded ground straps between engine block, chassis, and ECM ground points
  • Blown or degraded fuse/fusible link in the main power distribution circuit

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 187PPID14550

Step 1 — Battery Load Test Using a digital multimeter or dedicated battery load tester, verify battery voltage under load. Voltage should remain above 12.4V at rest and above 10.5V during cranking. Replace any battery failing load test criteria.

Step 2 — Inspect Charging System With the engine running, measure alternator output voltage at the battery terminals. Readings below 13.8V indicate alternator wear or voltage regulator failure. On used machines, inspect the alternator wiring harness for chafing near the engine mount brackets — a known wear point on several Volvo EC-series models.

Step 3 — Inspect Ground Circuits and Harness Physically trace all ground straps from the battery negative to the chassis and ECM ground points. On used excavators, corrosion and loose ground connections are a leading cause of this fault. Use Volvo's VCADS Pro or PTT (Parameter, Test & Troubleshoot) diagnostic software to perform a live voltage monitoring test on the ECM supply circuit.

Step 4 — Check Connectors and Fuse Block Inspect the main fuse block and power relay connections for corrosion, heat damage, or loose terminals. Apply dielectric grease after cleaning all connectors.
