Fault Codes:Volvo Training materials 1ER21-01

What is Volvo Excavator Fault Code 1ER21-01?

Fault Code 1ER21-01 indicates a malfunction in the Engine Control Module (ECM) communication circuit, specifically related to a CAN (Controller Area Network) bus communication error or timeout with critical control systems. This code typically appears when the ECM loses communication with other controllers on the machine's electronic network, such as the hydraulic control module or instrument cluster.

In Volvo excavators, the CAN bus system serves as the central nervous system, enabling real-time data exchange between multiple control units. When communication fails, the ECM cannot coordinate engine performance with hydraulic demands, potentially causing the machine to enter a protective derate mode or fail to start altogether. For used excavators, this fault often stems from aging wiring harnesses, corroded connectors, or damaged control modules that have accumulated wear over thousands of operating hours.

Common Symptoms

  • Warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel, particularly the engine malfunction indicator or check engine light
  • Engine entering limp mode or derate, limiting RPM and hydraulic power output significantly
  • Intermittent loss of dashboard display information or erratic gauge readings
  • Machine failing to start or experiencing unexpected shutdowns during operation
  • Error messages on the multi-information display indicating communication faults

Potential Causes

The most common technical causes for Code 1ER21-01 in used Volvo excavators include:

  • Corroded or damaged CAN bus connectors, especially at junction points in the engine compartment where moisture accumulates
  • Wiring harness damage from rubbing against frame components, particularly near the swing bearing and along the boom base—known wear points on older models
  • Failing ECM or secondary control module with degraded internal circuitry
  • Voltage supply issues to control modules caused by weak batteries, failing alternators, or poor ground connections
  • Aftermarket modifications or improper repairs that disrupted CAN bus termination resistance

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code 1ER21-01

Step 1: Connect Volvo VCADS Pro or compatible diagnostic software to retrieve active and stored fault codes. Document all related communication errors and check freeze frame data to identify when the fault occurs.

Step 2: Perform a visual inspection of all CAN bus wiring harnesses, paying special attention to connectors at the ECM, hydraulic control module, and instrument cluster. Look for corrosion (green/white deposits), bent pins, or moisture intrusion. Clean connectors with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

Step 3: Using a digital multimeter, verify CAN High and CAN Low voltage levels at the ECM connector. Typical readings should show approximately 2.5V at rest, with 3.5V (CAN High) and 1.5V (CAN Low) during communication. Check termination resistance between CAN High and CAN Low—should read approximately 60 ohms with modules disconnected.

Step 4: For used excavators, inspect harness routing near pivot points and through the swing post area. Replace any sections showing abrasion, cracking, or previous repair tape. Check all ground connections to the frame, cleaning contact surfaces to bare metal.

Step 5: If wiring and connectors pass inspection, test individual control modules by swapping with known-good units or having them bench-tested by a Volvo dealer.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general diagnostic information. Complex electrical issues should be diagnosed by qualified technicians with proper Volvo diagnostic equipment. Always consult factory service manuals and safety procedures before performing repairs.
