Fault Codes:XCMG General E1073

What is XCMG General Fault Code E1073?

Fault Code E1073 indicates an Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit High Voltage condition in XCMG excavators. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is triggered when the Engine Control Module (ECM) detects an abnormally high voltage signal from the coolant temperature sensor (CTS) circuit, typically exceeding 4.5-4.8 volts for more than 2 seconds.

The coolant temperature sensor is a critical component that monitors engine operating temperature and sends resistance-based signals to the ECM. This data directly influences fuel injection timing, idle speed, cooling fan operation, and engine protection protocols. When E1073 activates, the ECM typically defaults to a substitute temperature value, which can cause inefficient fuel consumption, increased emissions, and potential engine protection shutdowns. For XCMG machines operating in demanding conditions, accurate temperature monitoring is essential to prevent catastrophic overheating and maintain optimal hydraulic system performance.

Common Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light or Engine Warning Lamp illuminated on the instrument cluster
  • Engine runs excessively rich or exhibits hard starting, especially when cold
  • Cooling fan runs continuously at maximum speed regardless of actual engine temperature
  • Engine enters derate mode or power limitation, reducing hydraulic performance
  • Abnormal fuel consumption with black smoke from the exhaust during normal operation

Potential Causes

The most frequent causes of E1073 in used XCMG excavators include:

  • Open circuit in the coolant temperature sensor wiring due to harness abrasion near the engine block mounting points
  • Failed coolant temperature sensor with internal circuit breakdown (common after 5,000+ operating hours)
  • Corroded or moisture-contaminated connector terminals at the sensor or ECM side
  • Damaged sensor ground circuit causing reference voltage feedback issues
  • ECM internal fault (rare, but possible in machines with electrical system history)
  • Previous improper repairs using non-OEM sensors with incorrect resistance curves

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code E1073

Step 1: Visual Inspection Begin by inspecting the coolant temperature sensor located on the engine block (typically near the thermostat housing). Check for physical damage, coolant leaks, or corrosion on the connector pins. On used excavators, pay special attention to harness routing where wires contact metal surfaces—this is a known wear point on XCMG models.

Step 2: Electrical Testing Disconnect the sensor connector and measure resistance across the sensor terminals using a digital multimeter. At 20°C (68°F), resistance should read approximately 2,000-3,000 ohms (verify exact specifications in your service manual). If readings show infinite resistance (open circuit) or zero ohms (short circuit), replace the sensor.

Step 3: Circuit Verification With the sensor disconnected, check voltage at the harness connector (ECM side). You should measure approximately 5 volts on the signal wire with ignition on. Test continuity of the ground circuit to chassis ground—it should read less than 1 ohm. Repair any open or high-resistance circuits before sensor replacement.

Step 4: Advanced Diagnostics Use XCMG diagnostic software or compatible scan tools to monitor live sensor data. Compare actual coolant temperature with sensor readings. Clear codes after repairs and perform a complete heat cycle test to verify proper sensor operation across the temperature range.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general troubleshooting information for XCMG excavators. Always consult your machine's specific service manual and consider professional diagnostic assistance for complex electrical issues or if you're unfamiliar with high-voltage systems.
