Fault Codes:XCMG General E1104

What is XCMG General Fault Code E1104?

Fault Code E1104 on XCMG excavators indicates a communication error or malfunction in the instrument cluster/display panel circuit. This diagnostic trouble code (DTC) signals that the Electronic Control Module (ECM) has detected a loss of signal, intermittent communication, or voltage irregularity between the main controller and the operator's instrument display system.

This code directly affects the machine's ability to relay critical operational data to the operator, including engine parameters, hydraulic temperatures, fuel levels, and system warnings. In XCMG equipment, the instrument cluster serves as the primary interface for monitoring machine health. When E1104 activates, the CAN bus communication network between control modules may be compromised, potentially masking other system faults and leaving operators unaware of developing mechanical issues.

Common Symptoms

When E1104 is active on your XCMG excavator, you may experience:

  • Blank or flickering instrument display panel with intermittent gauge operation
  • Warning lights illuminating erratically or all dashboard lights activating simultaneously
  • Loss of digital readouts for engine RPM, coolant temperature, fuel level, or hour meter
  • Inability to access diagnostic menus or service information through the display
  • Machine may continue operating normally despite display issues, creating a "blind operation" safety concern

Potential Causes

The most common technical reasons for E1104 on used XCMG excavators include:

  • Corroded or loose connector pins at the instrument cluster harness (especially in high-vibration cab mounting areas)
  • Damaged CAN bus wiring between the ECM and display panel, often caused by harness chafing against cab frame members
  • Failed instrument cluster internal circuitry due to moisture intrusion or component aging
  • Voltage supply issues from corroded ground connections or failing cab wiring harness
  • ECM communication module failure (less common but possible in high-hour machines)
  • Aftermarket radio or accessory installations that compromised original wiring integrity

How to Troubleshoot and Fix Code E1104

Step 1: Visual Inspection Begin by inspecting the instrument cluster connector behind the display panel. Remove the panel carefully and check for corrosion, bent pins, or moisture in the connector. In used excavators, this connection frequently suffers from vibration-induced wear. Clean connections with electrical contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease.

Step 2: Check Power and Ground Circuits Using a digital multimeter, verify the instrument cluster receives proper voltage (typically 12-24V DC depending on your XCMG model). Check ground continuity at the cluster mounting points—corroded grounds are extremely common in older machines operating in harsh environments.

Step 3: Test CAN Bus Communication With XCMG diagnostic software (or compatible generic software), monitor CAN bus communication between the ECM and instrument cluster. Check for resistance values on the CAN High and CAN Low lines (should read approximately 60 ohms between terminals with system powered off). Inspect wiring harnesses along known rub points near the cab mounting and door hinge areas.

Step 4: Component Replacement If wiring and connections test properly, the instrument cluster itself may require replacement. Before installing new parts on used equipment, always verify the ECM is communicating with other modules successfully to rule out controller failure.

Disclaimer: This guide provides general troubleshooting information. Always consult XCMG service documentation and qualified diesel technicians for your specific machine model and serial number before performing repairs.
